  • Meguiar Keep Clear coating made my headlights look cloudy

I bought new headlight a couple of months. They were crystal clear. I've been putting Liquid wax on them every 2 weeks. I applied Keep Clear headlight coating, which is supposed to last a one year and it made my headlight look opaque, like they are hazed, cloudy or fogged, maybe I applied a little too much.

Is there any way to make it look clearer or take off some of the coating or am I going to have to live with headlights like this until this thing wears off with time?

I tried cleaning with a cleaner and microfiber towel, but it didn't help much, it looks cloudy, which looks terrible compared to how crystal clear they were before applying this product

I'm not polishing them and risk removing clear coat off the headlights.

This freaking blows man, I wish I had know this would happen, now how do I remove this product. I messed up my headlight with this. There is no way to remove it except sanding which will remove clearcoat. This product blows. It is not clear. It hazes the headlights.

Now I don't know what to use to remove this. I read that using alcohol may damage the headlights. That's what is recommended to use if this thing falls on paint. I'm so pissed. I had crystal clear headlights and now they're ruined, they look ugly. They should remove "it can be applied to new headlights" because it makes them look worse.

        Cogos,

Something else is likely going on with your headlights. Can't imagine any possibility/situation where our Keep Clear Headlight Coating would damage a headlight. Also, it can be removed with isopropl alcohol. Please contact our Solutions Hub tomorrow at 800-347-5700, 7AM - 4:00PM PST so you can work directly with one of our Surface Care Specialists.

Re: Meguiar Keep Clear coating made my headlights look cloudy

I tried removing it with alcohol, but it takes so long, it barely removes it. I don't understand why. There is nothing wrong with my headlights. They are new. This coating simply is too thick, therefore, it reduces the clarity of new headlights, because is something that is sitting on top of it. The headlight have not been damaged, they simply look ugly compared to before. They don't look as clear before. They look shiny and hazed.

The alcohol will damage the headlights, that's the thing. It may remove it, but the damage is done, not to mention. I bought 2 bottles of alcohol, and it barely removes anything, even when rub it with force. I only did a small area, it removed some of it, but I didn't continue because Im afraid the alcohol will damage the headlights long term

This product is simply to thick, if I had known it would turn out like this, I wouldve never bought it. I was under the impression that it would be CLEAR like applying liquid wax or something. It is not clear. Of course, it will make restored headlights clear, cause they were never clear to begin with, but this is not good for new headlight and I even found a review that confirms my experience. Here it is.

Meguiar's G17804 Keep Clear Headlight CoatingDO NOT RECOMMEND.Used this on my new headlights to prevent UV damage and oxidation. I followed the directions exactly and my brand new crystal clear headlights are now left with a foggy haze. DO NOT buy this for new headlights (even though it says "Helps keep new headlights looking like-new")**UPDATE: 90%+ rubbing alcohol spray will take it right off. I sprayed a thick coat of rubbing alcohol over the headlight, let it sit for a minute. Then sprayed another thick coat and began to wipe over the headlight with a soft lint free towel. Do this until all the haze is gone. The alcohol will not damage your plastic or your paint. Came out looking like I never used this awful product. (Posted on 1/30/2018)
The guy says to use 90% alcohol, but I don't know if this will damage the headlights or not. I used 70%

I wish I had read these reviews before

Re: Meguiar Keep Clear coating made my headlights look cloudy

So, I managed to removed all this coating, my headlights are now clear again. This product SHOULD BE RENAMED and the advertising "it can be used for new headlights" be removed. It makes new headlights look worse. This works on restored headlights, because, they've been restored, they will never look like new headlights, so even the hazed up shiny look this coating creates is much better than whatever the headlights looked like before the restoration.

For new headlights, of course, it would make them look worse. This coating is not clear, is shiny and thick, it will add a thick layer, which will REDUCE the clarity of new headlights. Sure, it will protect them for UV rays while it looks ugly in the process, what's the point

I bought it cause I thought it would be clear and it wouldn't change the color like liquid wax doesn't.

Re: Meguiar Keep Clear coating made my headlights look cloudy

First off you need to chill and not post in every thread regarding the headlight coating. It was the 4th of July holiday and others are spending time with their families including the Meguiar's staff. Nick is nice enough to post while on holiday break.

Many times it comes down to user error. In this case it seems like you were heavy handed and applied to much. Thus giving you the orange peel look. I also question why you would even use it on brand new lights when the lights have no need for it. Put a coat of ultimate wax on them and call it a day. When the coating fails then use the headlight coating.

Anyway it sounds like you got it all off with the right product in IPA.

Re: Meguiar Keep Clear coating made my headlights look cloudy

Sorry to hear that you had an issue with this product, Cogos, but from the sounds of it you managed to remove it with the appropriate isopropyl alcohol. Whether it was, as you speculated, applied too thick or if something else happened, once removed as you've done you should be totally fine. Isopropyl alcohol should give you no problems at all, but we do suggest that after the alcohol cleaning you give the lenses a good wipe down with glass cleaner just to ensure that you've gotten any residual alcohol off - although it does tend to evaporate extremely quickly.

As The Guz points out, yesterday was indeed a holiday and our offices were closed. Our apologies for not being able to respond sooner but again, it appears that you've sorted things out nicely.

Re: Meguiar Keep Clear coating made my headlights look cloudy

Why I put it on new headlights? Because it says so in the advertising package. They should remove this from the package or at least give a warning that the coating may cause new headlights to look shiny and less clear. I wanted to protect my headlights and I thought the product would be clear like wax or sealant. Also, is not bad application as you can read im not the only one who had a similar experience when applying to new headlights

of course, any person would think or assume a product like this would be clear and wouldn’t change the color. It gives the headlights this shiny look which looks nothing like new headlights. Its a downgrade in looks. Even if you apply it lightly, the headlights will be shiny.

Is a good product for people whose headlights have already hazed on their own, is so thick that of course is gonna protect the headlights. I’m sure they put the shine in there to help making restored headlights newer
