Hello to all

i did the full 5 step meguiars paint cycle on my alpine white BMW not long ago. I finished off with Ultimate wax and a coating of synthetic sealant and what a gloosy and smooth feeling paint finish it had. This car has rarely seen the road in a few months and during the last 1.5 months have been working on the car to finish my interior conversion. During this period the car was not washed. I recall spraying some water to get some of the dust off but thats just about it. The driver

When spraying the car with water i recall seeing a stream of black dust/dirt which on the dry paint was not visible I let it air dry and continued working on completing my interior change project. Several days ago i passed by the front fender and when placing my hand on it, i was shocked as the surface felt like a piece of 80 grit sandpaper. I have been working on the interior for over a month and had not paid any attention to the exterior considering it sleeps in a garage and i had done the meguiars 5 step regimen not long ago. I gave the car a full wash yesterday and the paint finish has lost the magic, soft, slippery touch. Would the accumulated dust cause the wax to disappear? I waxed with Ultimate Wax/Synthetic sealant. What should i do now, reapply wax or clay/polish/wax?

It sounds like there is something on the surface. You could always add another layer of ultimate wax or ultimate quik wax.

I decided to use M105 and do a little wet sanding to remove a few scratches while in the paint correction process. I have encountered issues removing 2000 grit sandpaper scratches on the hood. I have had to do nnumerous passes with M105 but its taken forever to get them off the hoods paint surface. No issues removing 2000 grit scratches with the trunk and a few other areas. The hood has been a pain in the behind!!! Should i sand with 2500/3000/4000 and work from there? I left the hood for last and continued on with M205 across the rest of the paint surface. Looking awesome. Done for today and tomorrow will wash with Meguiars “wash plus” and comtinue on with ultimate wax/synthetic sealant and back to restoring the nagging hood

I am using a Meguiars DA polisher and 3/5 inch microfiber pads. I used one 1 pad of each but they were constantly cleaned. Maybe the pad lost its bite on the hood?

Did you use the DAMF Extra Cut, Cutting, or Polishing microfiber pads?
Since you have a 3 inch backing plate, the 3 inch cutting pads might work best. Unlike rotary, on D/A polishers the smaller diameter size pads of the same material are more aggressive.

You might look at the sandpaper products from the Unigrit system, 3m’s Trizact system.
You should be able to refine the sanding scratches by lightly using finer paper.
However..... Never paper plus just fingers! Make sure you have a good flexible pad between your fingers and paper.

Is it possible that the hood was painted at a different time than the areas that worked easier?
That could mean a difference in materials or techniques when the clear was applied.

i have the 3M Trizact 3000 grit sandpaper in my walmart online cart!!! ��. I have owned this car since 2007ish and the original owner had the hood painted due to rock chips. All other paint correction has gone as smooth as butter. I am goingto pickup the Trizact sandpaper but will give the 3” microfiber pad a run at the hood to see what happens.

i used the normal meguiars 5” microfiber cutting disk on the hood

The clear on my repainted '70 El Camino is rather hard.
Nick Winn and I tried several test areas, before trying to get the smaller scratches out of my hood.
We started with M205 and kept slowly increasing aggressiveness until we found the sweet spot.
We settled on M100 cutting compound, with 3 inch DAMF Cutting disks, 6 passes medium pressure and medium arm speed.

You may be experiencing a harder clear on your hood, since it was painted at a different time than the rest of the vehicle.

Remember to prime the Microfiber disk fully with your selected product before first use (or first use after cleaning too).

My BMW has factory paint except for the hood/passenger side fender. I am at Walmart picking up the 3M Trizact just in case the 3” microfiber pads do not get the job done. Almost $7.00 for 1 piece of Trizact sandpaper!! This stuff must be amazing.

I always prime my pads its become the norm for me.

I expect to put a happy ending to the hood dilemma and of course a nice, scratch-free and shiny hood surface

Just gonna chime in about Trizact...It is pricey but it does the job and does it well. Dropping down (or is that up?) to 5000 is like a miracle product. Really saves time when compounding the sanding marks out.

I will inform what takes care of the 2000 grit scratches, 3” microfiber pad or Trizact. 3M makes great stuff and the Trizact must be excellent as you and others say.
