  • Dual stage vs single stage for touch-ups - please help !!

    Black metallic, dual stage paint...
I've noticed that when doing minor knick fixes with a cotton swab coated with just the base coat....with activator...
and after curing, then sanding (2000 grit), and polishing with M-85, then M-105, the finish just does not match the clear-coated finish exactly.
Should I be touching-up with a SINGLE stage version of the color for these minor knicks ?

    Hi syswizard,

Touch up paint can be challenging. Unfortunately I do not have much advice for you : (

Nick - I am trying this website....it looks promising with good reviews:
Restore your car's original paint with automotive paint that's an exact match for your car's color. Our touch-up paint is high quality to deliver professional results to every paint job. at AutomotiveTouchup

      The prices are reasonable.
I am anxious to witness the hardness of their clearcoat.

My original idea was to order a 1/2 pint of single-stage from my local paint dealer.
This may be a superior approach.

I would try looking up videos online, I believe AMMO NYC has a touch up paint video.

          Indeed Nick -
          The AMMO tips are terrific.
However, I saw one where they were doing paint touch-ups with this cool applicator that was actually like a miniature cup with a tiny bottom spout.
You just dip it into the paint source, wipe it, and then the capillary action occurs when you touch the car releasing the paint from the cup.
Wow, this a a huge improvement over brushes or swabs.
I have not been able to find this cool tool anywhere.

Here is the link to Larry's NYC AMMO touch up on an older Porsche.

Watch to see how he uses the special tool.
              He is using
Loew-Cornell Fine Line Painting Pen .
It is a tool used in the craft industry.

Looks like amazon carries them as well as some similar alternatives

I believe they are carried by Joanne's Fabric and Craft centers.
