    First Time Wet Sanding

    Hi all,

    First time poster here and about to attempt my first repair.

    I have applied some touch up paint to a small area and i am looking to smooth it over and make it less noticeable.

    My current plan is to wet sand after a week of leaving the paint to cure.

    I'm going to sand using 3000 grit paper and the pencil eraser trick. I've also bought some Scratch-X 2.0 that I will apply with a Meguiars DA Power System with a Dewalt DC725 18v Cordless Combi Hammer Drill.

    I'm looking for any suggestions that can make this look as inconspicuous as possible and also if I should take any steps after the Scratch-X

    We should be able to share some tips with you here, but in general, this can be a tough/dangerous project. From the looks of your picture, the second/larger area you have applied touch up paint to is right up to an edge. I would not sand directly on the edge.

    I am not familiar with the "pencil eraser trick." Can you please further explain this technique?

    So Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0 & our DA Power System is not necessarily designed to remove actual sanding marks. Although, I suppose you should be able to remove 3000 grit with our DA Power System & a Compounding Pad, but if you are not able to easily remove them after a couple attempts, it would be best to look to a different liquid, like our M105 Ultra Cut Compound, and possibly a different machine.

    Which specific brand of "3000 grit" are you using? Not all sandpaper is created equal. Is it a paper or a "foam backed disc"?

      Hi Nick,

      Thanks for the reply!

      The pencil eraser trick is where you glue a 'hole-punched' amount of sandpaper to the eraser. This means you have a smaller surface area to work with avoiding unnecessary cutting of paint. I am hoping by using this method I can sand away from the edge you have mentioned.

      The DA seems to have come with x3 polishing pads, I take it these are no good. Am I correcting in thinking I need the red pads? What other machine would you recommend on a tight budget?

      The sand paper I have is non-branded but is silicon backed and electro covered.

      Hopefully this info can point me further in the right direction!

        I used the pencil eraser trick....works well. I have small erasers and then the triangle ones which are larger.
        Check out this hi-tech sand paper: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
        To remove sand scratches even at 1500, I've found that M-85 polish, followed by ScratchX 2.0 is a great combination.
        Finish up with M-105 and M-205.
        2014 Porsche 981 Boxster - Black Basalt Metallic; 21" wheels with oversized Toyo T1R racing tires.

            Also, what pads should i use?

            Scratch-X - Compound
            M105 - Compound or Polish
            M-205 - Polish

              Yep, for small nicks, just twirl the round eraser tip. That minimizes the loss of clear coat.

                    I have now wet sanded the paint and used scratch-x. Although the sanding scratches have gone, the colour of the touch up does not match as well. Is there a way I can blend it in more?

                    I did try a post an image but it hasn't been approved yet.
