  • Removing top layer of paint

    Hello

Recently purchased a 73 vette project

She is now running and driving...

I discovered the P.O. slapped paint over the top without priming.
One hit with the power washer flaked away much of the topcoat.

I am struggling with a few stubborn spots

    Any suggestions Heat? chemical?

    Thanks

    Mike

There are specific products to strip paint from fiberglass.
      Fiberglass is not steel.

Here is good video on soda blasting a C1 Vette. Not soda blasting is softer than sand blasting.

Classic example of poor, poor surface preparation......wow, the PO was so lazy.
You are now stuck with a big mess.
Chemical is the only way to go IMHO.
Follow with rough scuff pad, DA sander 180 grit, then double coat of urethane primer.
Wet sand with 220, then 400.
Finish coat. Are you going single or dual stage ?

You don't want to use a paint stripper that is not safe for fiberglass.
If it soaks into the pours of the gelcoat or glass mat, it can be negatively affecting the primer and paint for years.
Make sure to check with those restoring C3 Corvettes to find the safe methods to remove the paint.

I miss my old C1 friend.
It carried nothing extra that would add to weight. Things like bumpers, radios, ac, extra brackets, most emblems were stored in the garage for weight savings.
