      Re: Products - Which Order ?

      I think I finally figured it out.....the crazy color scheme is just too much.
      Yellow/Orange/Green: compound
      White/Black: transition
      Blue: glaze
      Red: sealant

      At least that's what I've gleaned from the videos.

      What about the microfiber pads ?

        Re: Products - Which Order ?

        It sounds like your rainbow of pads are coming from multitude of pad suppliers. There is no industry standard on pad material color.

        In posts above you asked about ranking aggressiveness for some Meguiar's products.
        As selection of product matters to cut/finish, so does pad selection.
        I'm going to suggest that we answer the question below for you. Yet keep in mind that we are talking only about one manufacturer's pads and what you find in a tool store or online website likely will not fit the answer below.

        From the videos The Guz posted for you above, rank aggressiveness of the Meguiar's 5 & 6 inch foam pads.
        Burgundy = cut
        Yellow = polish
        Black = finish

        You can mix pads with product to fine tune your results, depending on how your paint responds.
        An example appeared in an earlier post on this thread, where Mike Stoops was quoted on using different pads to take advantage of the flexibility of M205.

        Here is an thread started by Michael Stoops (complete with good images and tables).

        It also includes some information on the microfiber pads.

          SysWizard,
          Sometimes it is best to start with one system with components meant to work together. When we start learning computers, it is best to choose one system with parts menat to work together. This normally gives better results than grabbing a motherboard, memory, storage, video card etc and trying to assemble our first computer. Although our components we select might be good, there will likely be areas where we cannot take advantage of the mixture to the max level of one component.

          This is a link to a video with Mike Pennington, Jason Rose and Mike Phillips discussing the Meguiar's DA Microfiber System.

            I am a bit late to the thread here. I believe I initially did not respond because I saw you were getting good advice from our forum members, like the below:

            Keep in mind that technique and pad size and material change aggressiveness too.
            Do test spots (in top down) until you are getting the results you want.
            If M205 finishes well, then there is no need for more aggressive compounding.

            M205 (least aggressive)
            Ultimate Compound
            M105

            I would keep the M85 for rotary use.
            I would keep the scratch X 2.0 for hand use.

            If a compound is needed to remove swirls/scratches, yet leaves some DA haze, use it and then follow up with M205 for a shiny finish.

              Thanks Nick - I think I'm good now...with one exception:
              Is it possible (or recommended) to move up to a 6", 6.5" foam or microfiber pad even though the base of the DA is set at 5" ?

                What specific D/A Machine are you using?

                  Nick, Syswizard has a new Torqx DA.

                  SysWizard
                  On DA, the smaller the pad, the more aggressive. The work from the machine oscillations is concentrated in to a smaller area on a smaller pad.
                  An example in a Meguiar's DA Microfiber System

                  6 inch MF cutting pad, aggressive
                  5 inch MF cutting pad, more aggressive
                  3 inch MF cutting pad, even more aggressive

                    Thanks Bear, and that makes sense.
                    Any reason I cannot use Meguiar's pads on a Torqx DA ?
                    Note: I only got the Torqx because it was a returned item on sale.

                      So, the Ultimate Compound is M105 and Ultimate Polish is M205. When you say "for the consumer" is it just the pretty packaging or is there another difference?

                      And what would be the corresponding pads that you'd use with them? Not talking microfiber, but foam.

                        No, there are significant differences.

                        For instance, Ultimate Compound has a richer lubricating matrix, which resists drying out, and producing a ton of dust. M105 is designed for short buffing cycles. Unfortunately a lot of users want to use it for extended periods which causes a lot of dust. The dusting shows just much that product is loaded with abrasives.

                        Ultimate Polish seems more similar to it's professional counterpart - M205. To me finish of both is incredible, but M205 seems more "pure". I love UP. Probably my favorite product of all time.

                          You must have the Chemical Guys pads.

                          I've tried all of those a lot, years ago.

                          I'm not a fan of the yellow orange or white, so I sold them all on eBay or the FB trading post.

                          Green - Compound
                          Blue - Polish
                          Black - Cleaner Wax
                          Red - Sealant

                          In the situation where I need more cut during the compounding step, I use a microfiber cutting pad.

                          To make it even more simple, I might use the Cleaner Wax with the Blue pad too.

                          I find the Yellow, Orange, and White foams are too stiff, and too smooth to work without a lot of pressure, which works against getting good pad rotation.

                              Usually Buff and Shine.

                              Foam:
                              Black = Cleaner Wax
                              Red = Sealant
                              Blue = Polish
                              Green = Compound
                              Orange/Black Microfiber = Compound.

                              I also have some Lake Country Hydrotech, Meguiar's Thin Foam discs, and microfiber system discs.
