  • 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe Paint

    Hello,
Thank you for having this great Forum. Your products are great. I'm the 2nd owner of a 1979 Lincoln Continental Coupe. All perfect except the paint on the hood, truck and roof. It's a little flat. I would like to know what wax product your recommend on paint that is 39 years old. I value her age and her perfection. Thank You

    Is this the original paint?
Do you know if it is lacquer or enamel?
Is it single stage or does it have a clear coat over the color?

        Your message was truncated.
It seems like some devices send a code for the apostrophe that gets interpreted by the Forum software as an end of message.
Try to avoid it by avoiding contractions. Use "I have", "It is", "Meguiars" and that will help avoid the truncation problem.

So sorry, let me try again. I am a novice with car finishes. I have owned this Lincoln for 15 years and always used a paste wax. She is kept inside with her custom cover. I have researched you question and have found the Lincoln was a single stage, enamel with no clear coat. It looks they started using a clear coat in 1980. Her sides are great but her hood, roof and truck have lost their shine because they almost appear a slight mat finish.

Welcome to Meguiar's Online. We appreciate the comments!

Regarding the finish on your 1979 Lincoln Continental, it could likely benefit from a good paint cleaner/compound.

We would suggest taking a look at the following article, which covers our 5 Step Paint Care Cycle:

Meguiar's 5 Step Paint Care Cycle

I am assuming you are working by hand also? Or do you have a machine? We are big fans of the right machines, like dual action polishers. Below are a couple good articles to read if you are interested:

Re: 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe Paint

Thank you and I appreciate all of your help. I will be doing it by hand because I am concerned about the force of a machine. I'll let you know how it goes. You guys are the best.

In addition to the information that Nick Winn provided, I would like to add one more online article that is likely to be helpful.

This article shows how Meguiars M07 Show Car Glaze can be used as a first step to replenish the oils in older single stage paint.
It is written by Mike Phillips.

                Restoring Single Stage Paint

TTown, get two small bags of microwave pop corn. Pop one and then hit the link. The second bag is in case you find yourself engaged in the article to the point of needing the second bag.

Here is a plus to get you engaged. One of the examples is a two door 1973 medium gold Lincoln.

Re: 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Coupe Paint

Two friends of mine who are also Members of this Meguiars Online Forum and fellow El Camino owners have successfully used M07 and followed up with polishing. BillyJack posts frequently here. HkdUp87 got a great buy on a '69 El Camino with a frozen engine. It was painted 10 years earlier in a water based single stage cheap paint. It was neglected by the previous owner. He followed the M07 techniques of Mike Phillips and then used Meguiars 105 compound, then M205 Meguairs Polish followed by Ultimate Paste Wax. Both guys will tell you Mike Phillips M07 first method is the way to approach restoring old single stage paint.

Both will tell you to use caution and not be aggressive. The paint can be very thin.

                    Polishing the Pumpkin
This is Member HkdUp87 '69 single stage repaint.
It has already gone through a couple of overnight saturations with M07.

The drivers side roof is cleaned (clayed) and ready for more work.
The passenger side of roof has just finished Meguiar's Ultra Cut Compound M105 with a dual action polisher.
The hood has had the next step with Meguiars polish M205 Ultra Finishing Polish M205 with a dual action polisher.

This is not a show car. It has a particular job to do (see last image).

Here is the pumpkin doing the job it does for HkdUp87

Looking GREAT. Thank you. I'll work slowly now that the temperatures have cooled off. Great project for the Fall.
