  • Hi all, looking forward to learning and hopefully supporting others

    Hi

Im Chris and I’ve been using merguiars now for about 10 years but I now want to step up my game and have gone from owning one car to two cars a van and a motorhome so need to master an electric polisher to not only achieve great results but give me my Sunday back!

I have just bought a Milwaukee M18FAP180 variable speed polisher to assist with the polishing and waxing.

I know that people say have a DA for safety reasons but I opted for the Milwaukee because it’s cordless and I have loads of batteries for work anyway and the motorhome isn’t kept at home and I don’t have electricity at storage. So I suppose I’m hoping that I can use the rotary safely and I would appreciate any input and advice to get started.

All vehicles are under three years old and have been well cared for, regularly washed, clayed, polished and waxed so at the moment there’s no aggressive work required.

I thought that if I continue to use the ultimate polish and wax but buy Meguiar’s yellow and black pads for the polisher that would not be abrasive and save to use.

Is there anyone using this polisher?

If this is in the wrong place please advice where I should post.

    Thanks Chris

    Welcome to MOL

I don't have any experience with this polisher.

But to answer your question, ultimate polish is an abrasive polish. The yellow pad also does offer some cut to it. This combination can remove light to moderate defects. The black foam pad has little to no cut.

      Thanks for your response

i will get the black pad for a starting point and see how I get on, which polish would you recommend for a novice who doesn’t need anything abrasive yet?

      Thanks

Welcome to Meguiar's Online. The Milwaukee Rotary you have bought is a great tool. Comparing to a D/A Polisher, in addition to safety like you have mentioned, rotaries are just more aggressive in general. D/A tools are also much easier to use. With a rotary, you may also end up fighting holograms or buffer trails, since it's very common to leave these marks behind. I understand you already have made your purchase, but I personally would vote d/a polisher. Flex Tools has a cordless D/A.

Is the motor-home you have painted with clear coat? Or a non-painted fiberglass/gel coat?

          Hi

I believe the motorhome is a gel coat, I’ve had great results with the meguiars boat/rv cleaner wax (by hand).

For the cars and work van I use the ultimate range but again by hand it just seems to consume so much time.

Somebody else pointed out the flex cordless da today but it is nearly three times the price of the Milwaukee due to me already having the batteries and chargers. Should I be thinking of cutting a loss on the Milwaukee and just stick to by hand or could I get to grips with the rotary?

Do Meguiar’s offer training or classes in the uk?

          Thanks

That Milwaukee rotary is an awesome tool - I love mine!! But, as Nick points out, a rotary can be a handful for a new user. Just keep the speeds low to start with and keep the pad as flat as possible to the paint, and above all - take your time! Start slow and resist the urge to hurry things up if you aren't getting the results you're looking for at first. You might also want to contact our guys in the UK - https://www.meguiars.co.uk/contact-us/ - to see about their training programs. Tom and Dale are awesome, passionate guys who love teaching people how to detail properly. They're based in Daventry, if that helps you at all.

Thanks the comments mean a great deal.

Would I be best to start with the motorhome which is practically all flat, well the back habitation anyway or should I do one of the cars or van first?

if the above products I use are a bit aggressive for a newbie could you point me in right direction to what I need to purchase.

Also Michael since you own the same polisher did you keep the Milwaukee backing pad or swap it for a merguiars one?

i am going to go to a breakers yard and get a bonnet to practice on before I have a go on the real thing.

              Thanks again Chris

I'm using Meguiar's backing plates and pads, of course.

Spoke with Dale at Meguiar’s uk today who said that they don’t offer support or training with a rotary and to be honest didn’t seem interested either which I find a real shame.

I’ve been and got a few test panels so I’m sure some online videos and patience is the way to go.

                  Thanks Chris
