So I’m an idiot. I noticed the tiniest little mark in my brand new black truck. I got out the Meguiars ultimate compound, a microfiber cloth and briefly rubbed it out. Trouble is now I have this ugly hologram where I was working it. I put the ultimate wax over it but it still looks pretty noticeable (only when I shine a light on it, probably will look OK in daylight.) I know black was going to be a nightmare but this is ridiculous. Anything I can use that would be less aggressive than ultimate compound?!?

You could try some Ultimate Polish. You are near an edge, so be careful even if working by hand. I would recommend a foam applicator, work an area about 2 times the size, and do not rub in one place over and over. Move left and right, then up and down. Make sure you utilize even pressure across your hand, resist the temptation to dig in with your finger tips. Some paints are remarkably soft. Don't over work it chasing perfection. Sometimes less is more.

Thank you and thank you Meguiars. I didn’t know they made an ultimate polish but it really did the trick. Looks almost completely flawless, even in the spotlight. I’m going to leave it alone now. Neighbors probably think I’m crazy out there polishing my truck at 9 o’clock at night.

Might want to look at the yellow foam applicators as well for future work.. they could be a bit milder than cloths.

Sorry to hear about the trouble. Like others have mentioned, soft foam applicator pads like our W0004 Foam Applicator Pads are usually best for working by hand. Microfiber Applicators by hand can remove defects quicker, but have a much higher chance of not leaving behind the best finish on a darker color. Also as others have indicated, especially when working on black, it's going to be best to follow with a polish after the use of a paint cleaner or compound.

Ultimate Compound for defect removal (leaves a slight haze)
Ultimate Polish to follow UC to remove haze and add clarity and gloss.
Ultimate Wax (I prefer the liquid) to seal and protect the paint.

It sounds like your black paint may be on the soft side.
You may wish to use the Two Bucket Method etc. for washing.

I own a silver vehicle and a black vehicle owns me. The black one demands attention, washing, detailing, waxing and an occasional dinner out at a nice restaurant. The silver one demands nothing and it looks just fine. I think the black vehicle is taking advantage of me, and the silver car is more my style. We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Thanks, I'm certainly learning that already. Never owned black before but when it's clean, there's nothing like it. Paint does seem very soft. May look into ceramic coating in the spring. Dealer did wax it for me before I took delivery so nothing urgent to be done other than keep it clean.

Polish, but a good brand like SONAX. It will take off the holograms. That’s nothing bro no worries.
