Which cutting compound to use on new Seat car

Hello everyone,

Misses finally has her own car and I decided to pick up detailing again since the paint has been neglected by the previous owner. But I'm a bit lost on what to get now in 2019. However, I have tried to do some homework and I am hoping on getting some feedback in order to get going again.

Previous work flow:

- Washing and claying the car
- Next I use a G110v2 DA polisher on which I used to use the yellow 7" W8207 pads with Ultimate Compound. At the time, I recollect using the equivalent cutting pads was not recommended for using with a DA polisher
- Afterwards just finishing with carnauba wax. A polish was not needed as the results were overall fine except for some more stubborn scratches.

This worked fairly well, but at times I wished I had a bit more cutting power grunt for the more reluctant scratches to get the paint from fine to very good.

So in 2019 it seems it is worth getting the new 5" or 6" DPB5 or DBP6 DA discs. So this is the plan for the new work flow:

- Get DFC5 or DFC6 cutting discs which would require getting also the DPB5/6 backing plate.
- Use the old W8207 7" pads for polishing IF this step would be required. I do prefer skipping polishing if possible.

But should I still use Ultimate Compound? Or W101 and now there is also W110? And in light of what compound to use, which compounds require a polish afterwards to remove the fine scratches created by using the cutting pad?

I would definitely recommend the 5 inch backing plate. You will take advantage of the tools power compared to using the 6 inch backing plate.

The new foam discs are great pads. I would recommend picking up the burgundy and yellow polishing pads. A good reference article for you to reference on the number of pads needed

Ultimate Compound and Ultimate Polish are good polishes that get the job done. If you have them in your possession then you can use them. If you want to try out the newest product then M110 and M210 are a good combination. Both are user friendly products.

I can not tell you how the paint will behave without being there in person. So you will constantly here these two words TEST SPOT. This will tell you what you need to do with the paint. A compound can and may leave DA haze or micro-marring which will need to be cleared up with a polish. Your test spot will tell you that.

Hi Guz. Appreciate the reply. Do you know what the difference in terms of cutting power and hazing is between the UC and the M110? I suppose either are equally suited for a DA polisher.

The number of pads thread was really useful. I learned the hard way one is not enough:-) For reference, our cars are the size of Seat Leon and Ford Focus clipper for instance, and 3 pads work just fine if you do it in 2 days and clean the pads in between.

M110 has more cutting ability over UC. They can both be used on a DA.

Can't say about which causes more hazing. That is going to vary depending on the paint.

I would also agree, for your G110v2, a great upgrade, is to outfit the machine with our DBP5 Soft Buff D/A 5" Backing Plate paired with our Soft Buff D/A Foam Discs. Below is a article which you should find very useful"

The m110 normaly needs refining with m210 where as the ultimate compound gives a finish like a polish, as always said use least aggresive product to get the job done, ie ultimate compound, and if it takes too long you can always up the speed and slow the arm movement down and use a microfiber pad.

Not necessarily true. It is all paint dependent. M110 can finish out great with no need to follow up with M210.
