June Thursday Night Open Garage was a fun one, with a couple projects, a lot of people & plenty of detailing discussion.
Here is quick trick when folding your microfiber towels. If you alternate the leading edge when stacking, the towels are less likely to collapse over to one side.
First up, this abused daily driver.
All the above - swirls, scratches, stains, oxidation, severe etching.
We started by claying with our C2000 Professional Mild Detailing Clay.

We typically start by explaining that there is two basic approaches to working on paint. Wash & Clay is standard, and comes first, and from there, it is really a matter of how much time one wants to put into it. The best results take the most time. We have plenty of options which deliver great results, in a short amount of time, but again, the best results are typically a multi step process, which is much more time. The owner originally wanted to do a shorter time/ one step cleaner wax type approach, but that quickly changed once he saw what was possible. The owner of the vehicle recently purchased a Rupes 15 random orbital D/A, so it made sense to use the same machine he owns, to test what system of products/pads he wanted to use.

We ended up using M110 Ultra Pro Speed Compound & M210 Ultra Pro Finishing Polish. 110 via DMC5 D/A Microfiber Cutting Disc. 210 via DFP5 Soft Buff D/A Foam Polishing Disc. The results were much better, but far from perfect. In our opinion this paint is permanently damaged from years of neglect.
Next up we had this 2014 Ram 2500 Diesel in Black Paint. For this vehicle, this owner did not care how long it took, he wanted the absolute best results.
This was the condition of paint on the truck. Light/Moderate swirls, scratches.
The owner recently purchased a Rupes 21 random orbital d/a, so it made sense to use the same machine to develop a system of pads/liquids/techniques to achieve his desired results.
We started with M110 Ultra Pro Speed Compound via DMC6 D/A Microfiber Cutting Disc & Whoa! Paint was a little on the soft side! Not expecting that. Below pictures is what is referred to as D/A Haze or micro marring. The goal is too find a system which provides as close to 100% defect removal as possible with as little to no haze as possible. This combination was going to be too aggressive. The more haze left behind, the more work it is going to take in the finish polishing step to remove.
Derek Bemiss of Detail Werks was in attendance & had a go at the paint. We stepped down to our DFC6 Soft Buff D/A Foam Cutting Disc with M110 Ultra Pro Speed Compound. We were happy with this combination for the initial compound step. Great defect removal, with much less haze than our microfiber cutting disc.
The rest of the night which is not pictured consisted of many attempts to finish polish the paint on this truck, & leave the finish tick aka micro mar free. We felt like we had tried everything, Large stroke D/A, 15 MM D/A, Standard Stroke 8MM D/A, Yellow Foam, Black Foam, high pressure, light pressure, short cycle, long cycle, it seemed like nothing was going to leave the paint D/A Haze free. After lots of attempts, it was time to phone a friend. We called Kevin Brown aka buffdaddy, and after some back & forth, he was able to figure out a process that would work for us. Our Process ended up being:
M110 Ultra Pro Speed Compound via DFC5 Soft Buff D/A Foam Cutting Disc, 5 - 6 passes, 21MM D/A, speed 4 for first 3 passes, moderate pressure, moderate arm speed, speed 2.5 for last 2 passes, lighter pressure, faster arm speed.
M210 Ultra Pro Finishing Polish via DMF6 D/A Microfiber Finishing Disc, primed pad, then backed product out of pad until very very little was left, 2 quick back & forth passes, speed 3 or so - this step further refined the paint & left no ticks, but left haze.
M210 Ultra Pro Finishing Polish via DFF6 Soft Buff D/A Foam Finishing Disc, 4 - 5 "freckles" sized drops of product on the edge of the pad, a light mist of water, & again a 2 quick back & forth passes, speed 3 or so - this step removed the haze & left the black paint glossy.
Yes, this paint was sensitive! Sometimes test spots take a long time! Thanks to all for sticking around, i think it was a great learning experience for everyone.
