Hey hey! From polishing knives to polishing cars!
Hello everyone!
Several years ago I bought my wife a set of kitchen knives, which lead me down a huge rabbit whole of how to sharpen them. Ultimately I got quite good at it, and moved on to pocket knives, eventually learning how to achieve a fairly perfect mirror edged razor sharp blade. Through this I learned how to sand and polish aluminum quite well, metal, etc, and body/detailing work kept coming up in my search results. So a couple years ago I ended up doing my wifes headlights, wet sanding through various grits, and polishing with my (terribly underpowered) 12v drill using some Flitz polishing paste. Worked exceptionally well, I gotta say. Still looks good today. But this gave me an itch, much like the sharpening itch I had, to do more. To make the rest of the vehicle look just as good!
Over the last couple years I have been doing extensive research, creeping on these forums an absolute ton, and have finally formulated a plan of attack. Very early on I settled on the Meguiars products, and now always have a bottle of interior detailer and UQD ready. I use UQW as a basic protectant and am still surprised how long it lasts, and use the UQD to clean dust off. I have clayed a bit, gotten into a 2 bucket washing method, and continued to do more research.
Soon now, I will get the HF DA, with a new backing plate, and the Meguiars soft buff foam pads (DFC5/DFP5/DFF5), coupled with UC and M205, and start my hand at paint correction. For my wifes car I feel like I will definitely need the DFC5 pad, but everything I have read makes me really uncertain. I am also unsure if the DMC5 pad would work better with UC or not...nobody seems to have tried this combo much that I can find. And whether or not the DFP5 pad would take out any hazing or swirling left with from the microfiber pad. I am excited to start testing I guess! I think I really want to use D300 with the DMC5 but I have a whole bottle of UC to go through first and I don't want to waste it.
