Scratch Removal

Working on a 1998 Chevy Tahoe. Very neglected original paint.
Working on the driver side of the hood as my test panel.
Clayed it, used my orbital with wool pad and M105 + M205.
I am left with a very nice shine and some scratches.
The scratches do not snag a fingernail when dragged across. So they appear to be in the clear coat layer.
I have a lot of these scratches all over my test panel, and am certain over most of the truck.





What is the best way to address these scratches?
1) Color sand by hand with 2000 or 3000 grit, then more orbital + M105/205?
2) Reviewing the info on this forum, maybe use a DA polisher with foam backing pad and 3000 grit wet paper?
3) Any other good info or suggestions?

Just a thought. You're polishing 20+ yr old paint, so perfection isn't likely. And the additional clear coat that you remove just to lessen one of those little scratches could hinder the life of your paint.

When you say orbital, do you mean rotary machine?

Also, D/A Sanding, with a foam interface pad, & a foam finishing disc, like our S3F6000 Unigrit 3000 grit foam finishing disc or 3M Trizact 3000, to answer your question, yes, in most cases, is less invasive in our opinion than hand sanding. Also, yes, this is what we would recommend. However, you need to weigh out your risk vs. reward if you are thinking of getting into sanding.

We are done for classes for rest of 2019, but definitely keep an eye out for 2020 schedule.
