Protecting the rest of a car with moderate fried paint?

Mostly my own fault, but one of my cars had to be parked outside without attention for a couple years resulting in burnt/oxidized paint in several areas. Its bad enough that long term I expect to need a full respray to restore the original silver metallic color. Lots of other work will be done before that happens, maybe a couple years or more, so I am looking for ways to protect the paint that is still good.

Wash and wax or do I need to do something special on the damaged areas?
