    Clear Coat issues

    Hi all,

Not sure if this is the correct spot or not for this question. But last year my clear coat started to haze up on the back panels of my camaro on both sides. It is in a relatively small area. I tried wet sanding the area and doing the basics that I would do for repairing minor scratches, but nothing seemed to correct the issue. The only thing that I did notice was that if I scratch away at some of the edges with my finger nail, it is like the hazy clear coat comes off and shiny paint is underneath.

I am not sure what the previous owner may have done to both of these spots, or if this was a cause from the sun or what...but hoping someone here might be able to give me some direction on how I might be able to repair this issue without resorting to having the area repainted.

I can email pictures to anyone who wants to see the damage. I just realized you can't upload photos here?

It sounds like the clear coat is failing which is a common problem. The only way in our opinion to properly repair is to re-paint. We typically see shops either sand the panel down completely & start over with primer, sealer, color, clear, etc. or we also see shops do more of a "scuff & spray" repair, where the area is sanded with a certain grit & then only clear coat is sprayed (not primer, sealer, color, etc. )

Thanks - I would like to give the second option a shot. Would you know a little bit more about that process? Such as what grit they use to sand down the clear? Is it 2000 grit wet sandpaper? Is there more steps involved in the process? How about application of the clear coat?

My thing is the spots can't get any worse. I can try and repair them myself and if that fails my other option will be to have them painted. I should have most of what I need on hand I would imagine, so really it is just an investment of time for me and getting the right information from the experts

I have witnessed the preparation for the process, and I believe 1000 grit was used, but I did not see the car painted after the prep. Other that I do not have any more information which could help you. I would suggest having a professional painter / collision shop perform the repair.
