So, I just bought a new car, a 2020 buick sncore gx I think its called. Metalic red. I would think just a coat of wax, right?

If you are happy with the finish then you can add a coat of your favorite wax or sealant. If you think it needs to be clayed and polished then you have that option. Some new cars do end up getting swirled at the dealer.

Yea, I think I might use clay, but since its new was wondering if polish would really be any benificial

I would for sure use a fine clay. I've done plenty new cars that have accumulated debris while sitting on the dealer lot. As for the swirls that may have been added by the "lot washer", maybe you got lucky and this one was just produced and shipped to the dealer? Check the build date inside your drivers door jamb if curious. Have you seen any of the spider web light scratches while looking at the sun reflections on your car? Definitely put on your favorite wax/sealant asap, even if you're not ready to tackle any swirl removal yet.

I almost forgot to mention that you have the option to use an all in one aka cleaner wax and top with your favorite wax or sealant. The new Meguiar's 3 in 1 has lite abrasives in it which can correct some swirls. Claying will induce some kind of marring so don't use too much pressure.

A polish will also remove any defects but it will impart gloss as well.

Unfortunately when a new car leaves it place of manufacturing, it can be exposed to a variety of not ideal circumstances, improper washing, sitting in a lot dirty for weeks, it can be put on a truck & trailer, a boat, and it also can have issues paint defects when it leaves the factory. Because of this, even though the vehicle is new, we still do recommend performing a proper evaluation, to determine if any above surface contaminants or below surface defects are present. The above surface contaminants are always recommended to be removed, and this can be done with a clay bar like our Smooth Surface Clay Kit or Hybrid Ceramic Quik Clay Kit. If there are any swirls, fine scratches, or stains, which chances are there will be some, what extent you go to get every single one of the defects out depends on your overall goal for the paint. Most people do not attempt to keep their daily driver in show car like condition but then again others do. There are really a couple ways to remove any below surface defects present, 1) use a dedicated paint defect removing product like a compound or scratch remover. 2) use a Cleaner Wax. Cleaner Waxes like Meguiar's 3 in 1 Wax are a great way to provide mild defect removal ability, add gloss, & protection in one step. If you are looking for show car like results, most users would choose using a dedicated compound, polish, and wax. It's up to you & your goals for the car & also the condition on the paint.
