  • Happy to be here. Interesting question...

Thanks for having me. I have a somewhat unusual (maybe not for the experts on here) question about silver metallic paint. I own a Nissan GTR in super silver (metallic) paint. I noticed an interesting area of the paint on the rear quarter panel, just heading east from the gas door. Here's the best way I can describe it: It's a cloudy, blotch that is brighter than the rest of the panel. It seems to me that its under the top coat of the paint, somehow trapped inside. I can only see this if the light catches the paint at the right angle. Inspecting the paint closely doesn't show anything out of the ordinary.

Has anyone ever had experience with this before? The cars paint is perfect and has been well kept. I'm trying to figure out what the heck this is and if there's a way I can fix it.

    Thanks!

Welcome to Meguiar's Online. It would be best for us to help you evaluate this paint condition by seeing a picture. Each forum member has the ability to upload to our "Gallery - Photo Upload" Section, then you simply copy & paste the image into your post.

I can try, but its very difficult to capture on camera. The light has to hit it just right.

It is very difficult to assess without seeing it.

Along with being "Super Silver", the GTR's have super soft paint. Do you have access to a polisher or would you be working by hand? A finishing polish like Meg's #205 would be a good place to start, maybe a cleaner wax, both cases with a soft pad.

going off of what you describe, it reads like there could have been a repair/touchup done there.

Finally got the chance to upload a couple photos. In one of them you can see a slight clouded circle that is lighter than the rest of the panel. It's shiny and smooth on top with no roughness or discoloring on the surface. In the second photo you can see there are a couple "lines" in the paint that appear darker. Considering this being in the same area as the clouded circle, I am leaning towards what a member commented that a repair may have been made here. It's also right next to the fuel door, so perhaps some gas spilled. Ethanol is used as fuel with this car.

I'm starting to agree with a previous commenter that a repair may have been made in this area. Considering its right next to the fuel door (E85 used) that may have been the reason. The second photo shows some darker lines that appear to be underneath the clear coat as well. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

Thats a good idea HCAD. I do have access to a polisher but I am going to have the car paint corrected and ceramic coated in the near future. I think I'll just point out this area to them and they may be able to work on it.
