Wet Sanding

Hi,

I have tried wet sanding with a 3000 grit on my VUS.
When I cleaned everything I saw a discolored patch (see picture)
Anyone has an idea what is the cause of this? I didn't see any color on my grit. Is it a burn mark? Used a lot of water..

I will bring it to a professional, but was curious what has to be done to fix the problem.

I does kind of look like you went through the clear coat. Tough pic to tell though. Maybe another angle or two with the camera?

Yes, that looks like it's gone through the clear. I assume you can feel the rough edges around that spot where the clear ends?

unfortunately i have to agree it looks like you sanded right through the clear coat

Ok thanks. Actually, it is very smooth. I do not feel any difference in texture either. Could be because I polished it afterward. Either way, I will not try to fix it on my own to accentuate the problem. Hopefully, won't cost too much to fix.

color transfer,if sanded through CC, will come when buffing.it will show up on the pad. factory clears are extremely thin. its very risky to sand

Agree, only other thing that was in my head was possibly sanding marks which were not removed, but this defect does not look like sanding marks, and again does look like a "burn through." You may inquire/research about a shop performing a blend using only clear coat within this panel opposed to getting the whole panel sanded down & re-sprayed. Blends are difficult to perform with color but for this situation a shop can possibly "scuff & spray", whereas they scuff the area with a certain grit, & then spray clear. In other words it may not require re-shooting the color. This technique is more forgiving than blending within a panel with color. Easier to do when just spraying clear.

I am curious, if you do not mind sharing, what exact sand paper product were you using, were you sanding by hand or machine, if hand, what type of accessory to apply, and also how many passes/strokes did you perform in this area.

Hi,

I do not remember the exact sand paper product and I did it by hand using a sponge to make sure I don't apply too much pressure with my fingers. I did a couple of strokes but can't tell exactly how many. Probably around 10-15.

Body shop mentioned working on all the panel but paint will only be applied on that spot. It will also fix some minor scratches..

I know this may be basic, but can you confirm if you're using automotive sand paper or a hardware sandpaper?
Automotive sand paper is different and provides a proper finish.
