  • New Car, hairline scratch from microfiber - Please help!!

Good afternoon everyone. Hope everyone is doing well during these times. I recently purchased a 2019 VW Golf R, and just a few days ago as I was applying a spray detailing product with a microfiber towel I created a hairline scratch on the rear bumper. I was so upset, I couldn't believe it. As careful as I was, I need to be even more careful. Anyhow below are the pics. The scratch does not catch my nail, but at times I think I feel it. Also it seems to disappear with application of water. Lastly I used some Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0 with some Microfiber which helped a little bit. It can only be seen at certain angles when the car is clean, but of course since I know it's there I can not stop looking at it. Ive done tons of research on this on you tube and through this website. Just wanted to get some input from actual members who can see the scratch in the picture. Trying to figure out what my next least aggressive step to remove this scratch might be. Pictures are after the Scratch X 2.0. Looking forward to your responses.

Anyone? So From what I have researched my only next step is to use a rubbing compound with a DA? Can anyone recommend a product and pad that’s not to aggressive that could get the job done?

Be careful not to rub excessively with anything by hand. If you can feel the scratch at all, like you can, this is an indication it is likely going to require a fairly aggressive approach to remove. Based on the looks, I would recommend using one of our 3" D/A Microfiber Cutting Discs on a D/A Polisher Machine along with a compound like our M100 Pro Speed Compound or M110 Ultra Pro Speed Compound. If this combination does not remove the mark, next recommendation would be to machine sand with a automotive specific 5000/ 3000 grit foam finishing/sanding disc, like 3M Trizact, backed with a foam interface pad. These two suggestions are really what I think it is going to take to remove this scratch. These are fairly advanced methods & if this is really something you want to try on your own, we will have to give you very detailed instructions.

I would love some detailed instructions. Preferably with the least aggressive approach. I would prefer to approach this without having to do any sanding.

Do you have a machine or just working by hand?

I have access to a machine if necessary. So I could go either way.

If you are familiar with a dual action polisher and you own one, then take a 3 inch foam polishing pad and M205 or ultimate compound as your test spot. If you need more cut then you can move up to either a foam cutting pad a microfiber cutting pad. Don't work the area to long as you don't want to burn through the clear.

If you are able to feel it then you can make it look better.

Doesn’t seem to difficult. I imagine I will have to polish afterwards with a finishing pad and polish. Right?

Depends on whether or not you are left with DA haze or micro-marring using a compound.

Sorry for the late response. Let me try to find some additional resources you can look at in addition to just a text description.

Sounds good ty. Would there be any issue in using a 5-6 polisher instead of the 3 inch?

                          Hi David

Great looking car. VW can have thin clear and paint on the edges of the rear bumper so be particularly careful with pad on the edges, you may even want to mask them off.

Thanks for the heads up Rob. Have yet to tails the project. Scared of making it worse more than anything.
