Looking forward to what others see in the images.
My thoughts on clear coat failing problems included input from the other sections, so others may have completely different thoughts.

What causes clear coat failure? Is it due to neglect or a manufacturing error?

Just done the side of the car, I think it looks the tiniest bit better. https://ibb.co/hDkcpbh

To me, it is a definite improvement.
    We can see clearer reflections.
You now look like a person and not a large curly dark grey mole in the reflections.

It can come from multiple causes.
    * Pre-paint prep can affect adhesion between coats.
    * Paint quality and it's resistance to sunlight.
    * The amount of sunlight that the vehicle sees, which can be much less if vehicle kept in garage or car ports.
    * The temperature of the surface, which can get influenced by engine temps, the sun, paint base color and the orientation of a panel to the sun.
    * Contamination remaining on the surface, such as acid rain, bird droppings.

This is where we have some control by putting thin sacrificial layers like wax, sealants on for temporary protection until we clean off the contaminants and reapply protection layer.

I think we would need to see closer images with brighter pinpoint light sources to tell if this is a problem for you.
Here is a link to a thread that shows lots of images of clear coat failures from long term failures to those just starting.

The paint doesn't look as bad as some of them, the only place where there is no clear coat is a patch on the bonnet which happened this year, due to heat from the sun or something focusing in the heat on it. I've done multiple passes on the car but certain areas came up better then others, like the roof, that's the best, and the rear quarter panel, which is the worst.

I'm wondering if it's worth getting a higher cut compound, like Koch h9, which is closer to Meguiars M105 I think, or would it not matter because the clear coat ain't in good shape? The paint feels smooth after claying and polishing, but when I look at it, it looks bumpy or has little dimples.
