Haze on single stage paint from Meguiars 83 and MF..HELP?

I have a 64 Plymouth that was repainted in Hemi Orange Pearl before I got it so I am not sure when exactly. I tried to remove some scratches, that I now figured out were from my MF, with 83 and a low quality MF. Yeah I know, dumb. Well my scratches turned into a giant circle that looks gray from certain views. After reading for hours I decided to use 83, but this time with an orange correcting pad by Griots. The paint doesn’t seem to get damaged like with the MF, but my haze like circle won’t go away. I have tried by hand as well as with a Dewalt orbital DWP849X. I have tried Ultimate compound as well as Show Car glaze with no luck . I am more frustrated that I caused more damage than I am with the damage haha. I feel like I have “tried everything”, but I’m pretty sure that is my lack of knowledge on this speaking. Please help me out!

Welcome to Meguiar's Online. It sounds like this would be cleaned up with a finishing polish like our M205 Ultra Finishing Polish & a foam polishing or finishing pad.

Also, if you are just getting back into this, a dual action polisher would be much easier to get great results, compared to your DWP849X, which is categorized as a rotary machine. Very different machines.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask/post as many additional questions/comments as you would like.

I am willing to buy the m205 if you can please explain to me why that would work and not the 83. What is in it that would fix my problem? I have read I should be able to use the same product I caused the damage with to clear it up, as long as I use a foam pad. Clearly that doesn’t seem to be working for me, but I do notice much less paint coming off as I work...and it isn’t making it worse so that is a plus. Thank you for reaching out. The customer service line isn’t working and I was thinking I was out of luck.

Nick makes a great point on the machine. Even the best rotary users can't finish the paint hologram free. Thus Nick's recommendation to get a dual action polisher to finish out the paint haze and hologram free. M205 on a DA with a polishing pad should finish out just fine.

I gave it another shot with the 83 and rotary. This time I used much less product on the pad and did slower passes. I noticed a drastic difference. I have read about holograms, but that hasn’t been my issue....so far. I have read and been told to go to a DA. This rotary was gifted to my father years ago and for obvious reason(big and heavy) it got zero use. I tend to be cheap and like to use what I have around. Starting to realize being cheap around single stage paint isn’t too intelligent. I really appreciate you reaching out. I am clearly out of my concert zone on all this.

Haze is also a byproduct of an aggressive pad, abrasive liquid, tool and paint hardness.

Frequently pearl paints are three stage, rather than single stage.

They normally have a base coat, followed by a pearl coat that is comprized of mica crystal flakes of varying colors and mixed in with a clear or colored clear. Then that is topped by one or more clear coats.

Do you know which single stage paint you have installed?
Some of the single stage pearls are designed to not provide a high gloss.
Here is an example of orange pearl low gloss.

Any chance you can post a picture of the grey circle.

Microfiber disc is probably the last thing one would want to use on a rotary buffer.

I fear that the paint manage been burned.

What speed did you use? What was your technique like (pressure, rate of movement of the buffer, etc)?

Re: Haze on single stage paint from Meguiars 83 and MF..HELP?

I show people and they can’t see it so I don’t think a picture would work. I have to get a few feet away at a certain angle to get the light to reflect perfect to barely see it. Family thinks I am crazy haha OCD for sure. I am using a finishing foam pad. 1000 rpm with light pressure and I would say at medium speed(if high speed would be as fast as I could do it). All the damage was caused by hand with a terrible quality microfiber. Wiped a new cd with the towels I was using and it scratched it instantly. The paint is so soft I could rub that MF without compound, just soap and water, and it will start to cause the same gray like haze. Appreciate you responding.
