Removing polishing oils before sealing?

Hi all

I've been doing some research on if polishing oils need removing before applying your favourite sealant. After reading many articles, including this (https://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...t-bonding.html), I've come to the conclusion that for Megs products this isn't needed.

I would like to inspect my work though after polishing and am looking for a product to wipe down various test spots. Do Megs have such a product? Carpro Eraser seems like a decent one if not.

Also, I'm in the process of purchasing a DA kit here in Aus which comes with a few different Scholls polishes. Now, I prefer to stay within the Megs range, and always will, but I also won't waste these polishes and may as well use them up and give them a go. Here in Aus they are very popular and well known for being high quality.

My question is this - Megs LSPs do not instruct to clean the surface before applying, and that makes sense if you are keeping within the range (Chemical synergies and all that), but if I were to use these Scholl polishes and then use my Megs Ultimate Liquid Wax or Hybrid Ceramic Wax - would I need to do a wipe down of the polishing oils? Does anyone have any experience with Scholl polishes? Apologies for bringing these up in a megs forum.

Meguiars Surface Prep is similar to CarPro Eraser...and is cheaper. You will get a better bond and longer longevity if you wipe the panel down after you polish. With a wax/sealant it is not as important to do a surface prep/wipedown like it is when applying a ceramic coating but if you want to be thorough then clean after the polishing/compounding processes.

You do not need a panel wipe unless explicitly stated by the manufacturer of the protective product.

But, those panel wipes are great for inspecting work.

From what have read, Scholls are a very oily polish, sort of like Menzerna (which I use on occasion). I have never used a Meguiar's sealant or wax after, but I would imagine the carrier solvents would be able to cut through the residual polishing lubricants to successfully bond to the paint.

A lot of times I follow my Menzerna or 3D polishes with Duragloss sealants, all of which contain some degree of cleaning agent at minimum for bonding purposes.

Yeah a ceramic would definitely need a surface prep but I just dabble in waxes and sealants. I’ve not prepped after ult polish and gotten 4 months from a coating of HCW and it was still beading!

I can’t find Megs surface prep here in Aus. I’ve looked everywhere!

Does it just depend on if the LSP says it needs a wipe down or also on the polish? None of megs protective products (except their ceramic sealant)say they need a wipe down, but I’m wondering if that is only if you stick within the range? I’ve heard that Scholl isn’t too oily and the oils are mainly water based oils. I’ve heard great things about them and that the wipe off is very easy.

That’s interesting that Duragloss contains a cleaning agent. Sounds like I should have no issue waxing after Scholls either a megs LSP? Guess I can have a go and find out! I don’t really want to use a surface prep if not absolutely essential. Will use it to inspect work though.

Surface prep has been working out really well for me. However with that said... I have been using mineral spririts thoroughly first and then a quick wipe with surface prep.

You have received some good responses in this thread. Would just add to stick with an automotive specific wipe down product opposed to household or other chemicals.
