#50 cleaner/wax, what to follow with?

Hi Folks,
Been lurking awhile but decided to join. Been a car-truck guy all my life and in the past have done some paint and body. Presently working on a class A motorhome which I brought to a beautiful shine with Meguiar's products but now working on the one piece fiberglass roof which was in terrible shape. Sanded and painted the 4" wide radius edges that had peeled badly using base coat/clear coat and that came out great, now working on the white gel coat on the remainder of the roof. Scrubbed it clean first then tried some #50 marine cleaner and wax since I already had it and it was surprisingly easy with a random orbit, cleaned up very nice and now has a high gloss with no swirls. Question is what to use from this point on, considered the Ultimate wax but also considering Ceramic just because the roof is not something I want to spend a lot of time on if I can help it and I want it to stay protected as long as possible. Also wondering if the oils in the #50 will be a problem if I decide to put on a layer of wax or ceramic now and should I first wipe it down with grease and wax remover? FYI this RV will be stored indoors when not in use so that should extend my wax intervals. Thanks for any advice

Hi Brian,

Welcome to Meguiar's Online. Thank you for becoming a member. Happy to hear your efforts are going well. Our #50 is a great one step & has been popular for years. You can certainly add to the longevity by topping and/or using more frequently, a product like our Flagship Premium Marine Wax which is a full synthetic.

At this time we do not have any Marine/RV Products with our Hybrid Ceramic Technology, that said, we had heard of users having great results using our automotive hybrid ceramic products on fiberglass/gel coat. If you wanted to try one I would recommend our Hybrid Ceramic Liquid Wax. Only additional note I would recommend for anyone using this product on gel coat/fiberglass is that it is important the surface be high gloss & like new. If trying to apply on an oxidized surface it is likely not going to be very easy & splotchy.

The only product of ours which requires a special panel wipe like our M122 Surface Prep is our Hybrid Paint Coating. If you are using our Hybrid Ceramic Product Line, this is not a required preparation step.

Thanks Nick, and you answered all my questions. I actually did use the Hybrid Meguiar's Ceramic on the sides last time I washed it. The sides are painted and I used the Ultimate Compound followed by the Ultimate Polish followed by the Ultimate Wax, 2 coats. That was a few months ago and when I went to wash it this week I wanted to use something that would help me avoid water spots so I chose the Meguiars ceramic because I figured the application while wet would help eliminate water spots. I dried it after misting the ceramic on and did not rinse for the initial application per the video, but I understand subsequent applications are to be rinsed then dried. Anyway it came out very nice with very little smearing where I may have put it on too heavy. There are a few decals but I don't think the ceramic will hurt them though I could be wrong.
So for the roof the goal is ease of application and longevity, looks are not important as the main purpose here is to protect the thin layer of gelcoat from further deterioration. I think I will try the Flagship Marine product on your recommendation, plus it looks easy enough to apply. I'll probably pick up a waxer/polisher to make it even easier and get me off the roof quicker.

Sounds good regarding application & yes, due to the high amounts of actives within Hybrid Ceramic Wax Spray, it can be a bit finicky if too much is sprayed or there is not enough water on the surface, we have seen streaks. The easiest way to correct is to mist 2 - 3 light sprays of product into clean, damp, quality microfiber towel, and gently wipe the streaks away. I agree regarding the decals I do not see any issue. Sounds good regarding Flagship Premium Marine Wax, and, you could always top with Hybrid Ceramic Wax Spray as you have with the other areas. Yes a dual action polisher is the way to go IMO for autos/trucks, but especially for larger vehicles like a boat or RV.
