So...how do you get rid of the smell of death in your car? Before you start thinking the obvious, I mistakenly left a whole chicken in my trunk from my last grocery trip. Well here in Ga in 85-90 temp, it got pretty ripe. I have been airing out the car for last couple of weeks, spraying some bleach on the spare tire cover, upholsry cleaners for floor mats, etc. The smell is getting better, but still there. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I get funny looks from cops when I get pulled over.

i would wipe down all the plastics in the trunk with a good cleaner, shampoo the carpets and put in some boxes of Baking powder. You can get some with a sock inside the box so they will not spill. This should absorb any oders -

thx, that's a great idea about the sock. I was using charcoal. With the seats being leather, I wouldn't expect them to absorb too much odor...is my assumption correct?Originally posted by Sleper View PostComment

Clean as best as you can, replace cabin air filter if equipped, discard & replace any carpet parts which were severely contaminated, check out our Whole Car Air Refresher Odor Eliminators, you can also look into having a auto detailer use an ozone generator, that said, there are very specific ways an ozone generator machine should be used so make sure you are going with someone who is familiar.Nick Winn

thx nick, luckily the chicken was in the trunk and not the inside of the car. I have already used a air fresher, it helped, but not too much. I had some odor eliminator spray, i used and it seemed to work pretty good. I only had a little bit left though. I'm gonna steam clean the floor matts...etc and use another air fresher can. What do u recommend for the headboard? Is there a replacement for the odor eliminator spray?Comment

Stone coal, which is used for a forge. We used it at Codelco (I work there), to inhibit some chemical reagents, and it's great for softening and removing rare aromas. Once my wife left half an onion in the fridge, the onion smell lingered. I left a piece of charcoal inside the unit for two days, and the smell disappeared.

Two other things; replace cabin air filter and steam vents. You may want to put a chlorine tablet in a bowl of water in the trunk for a few hours, also.Comment
