  • Neighbour says HyperWash is killing our grass on the median! I say no! Who's right?!

My neighbor is saying the soap I use (Meguiars HyperWash) is killing the lawn on our shared boulevard (small 11'x7.5' patch of grass.)

I use 1oz in a 5gallon bucket (fill about 4.5.) I use 1 oz in my Foam Sprayer (and that's only sometimes, or just the bucket wash.) I wash the car once every week or two depending on weather (been only once every few weeks this year ) The water does trickle down the edge of this area but it's the whole patch that's going brown. I dump the extra dirty water once I'm done in the grass beside my car in front of our house in the same spot every time, and it doesn't have any such issues!

I think the issue is he cuts the grass very short and there is no shade there at all, and its rarely watered! What does he think will happen in this heat treating it that way?! He put down some seed this spring and it looked good till the heat came of course, but I don't know what kind of seed he used if it's good for full sun (doesn't look like it.) He has some nerve as we let them come into our backyard and use most of our garden to plant veggies etc as they don't have the room. We get along fine but I don't want this to be a thorn between us...

How can I tell him its not the soap, even though he says it might be the wax in it (HyperWash doesn't even have wax in it!) We are both car guys and like to keep our vehicles clean, but he has his done somewhere else...

I saw this page where Mike Stoops said it won't:

I use HyperWash as well and have no issues. Only thing I can come up with is that area is getting wet and then the hot sun is just beating down on it and burning the grass. But that is just a guess

I do not really have much for you that could definitively say our product is not causing it, but your theory sounds way more feasible than a little trickle of diluted car wash soap.

I thought of that too, but I wash in the evenings so not much time for any water to have sun beat on it.
EDIT: This looks to be a myth anyways: https://homeguides.sfgate.com/wateri...ass-67651.html

I also use a flexible pipe that (my neighbour gave me) diverts much of the water down our driveway and or the edge of this patch, so its not getting soaked, just wet along the edge. Not sure what else I can try or do to deflect water going that way (both driveways are angled towards this center median.)

Thanks for the info too Nick I don't think the soap is the issue, even talked to a lawn contractor that lives on the other side of the street and he says the same about the grass being to short for such a small area, not watered enough and possibly the wrong type of grass/to much fertilizer for that area. He even offered to let my neighbour know this but I will avoid that for now...

Great... now he is saying he will only take care of half of this 7' wide area, lol... He has taken care of it for decades since its 'looks' like its mainly on his side. He put down fertilizer and eggshells etc to bring it back, and last week put grass seed just on 'his side'... wow... So I'll leave our side that he scalped and killed and he can water his side himself now (he doesn't have a hose that reaches there, I made a custom length one that reached there perfectly from our house.) I'm done being nice about this...
