hey guys i am going to detail up my 06 f150 tomorrow and my steps will be.

wash 2 bucket
clay smooth surface
105 with yellow megs pad
205 with yellow megs pad
then 21 by hand probably

what speeds do i need to work the 105 and 205 using the da...i have searched and haven't seen a for sure answer! i will take pics of the progress too!

DA speed (porter cable or Meguiars G100/110) should be between 4000-5000 (speed setting 4-5).

If the 105 leaves a nice finish I would suggest a black finishing pad for the M205. If you need more cut, then the polishing pad might still work out for you.

I finished out 100% hologram and swirl free in a single step of M205 and a polishing pad (rotary) on my Focus- so it is possible.

well things didn't work out to plan.. i'm thinking i'm going to have a rotary to fix my paint. i'm sure i wasn't using 105 correctly. set the pc to speed 5, done a test spot and went in a north to south east to west overlapping motion with heavy pressure but the pad was still spinning. the product dusted really bad also and i think i worked it too long...the defects were still there with the halogen work light i had. i was using a yellow polishing pad too. i think i need to work with this stuff some more.

How many passes did you do before it dusted and was the surface cool?

i work working in a 2x2 section i done about..3 passes. i think i did work it too long b/c i went to a buddy's house that sells for megs and mobile 1 and i was working it WAY too long. i used a marron cutting pad too and it didn't dust at all, so i've got it figured out. and also he was telling me that the defects that i have, acid rain spots, bad swirls and cobwebbing..that i need to have a rotary to get it show car clear...so i'm buying a rotary and i have a black practice hood and going to start to learn how to do that.

Sounds like you're on the right track especially with the test spots and the "practice" hood.

Just another $0.02 advice: Allow plenty of time, like a good 1/2 day, for each polishing step. Full size trucks have a lot of square feet of sheet metal!

A general rule of thumb

The harder the paint, and/or the deeper the defects, the smaller the area you want to work at one time


Shrink your work area down to a smaller size when using a DA to remove defects. This is also noted here,

great info mike!!! i still think this is a good excuse to buy and learn on a rotary but i'm going to try again with the da also. i think that was my probelm for sure was my arm speed and the section size
